Summary of the action

Objectives of the action

Assisting agribusinesses (especially for hazel-nuts and vegetables) in the border areas of Azerbaijan (Sheki-Zagatala) and Georgia (Lagodekhi) to apply International Pest Management (IPM) system.

Target groups
  • Research institutions in the field of agriculture;
  • 40 local farmers and producers in the value chain in the target regions of Georgia and Azerbaijan;
  • 20 suppliers of pest control substances involved in IPM distribution chain.
Main activities
  • Development of new environment-friendly plant protection system in order to produce organic products by using safe means – entomopathogens - for pest-control (insects);
  • Creation of a network of potential value chain members for target products (hazelnuts and green vegetables) as a focus group for capacity building and networking;
  • Promotion of cross-border exchange of knowledge and expertise on agricultural crops pest-control in fields and greenhouses located in dry and hot climate areas of Azerbaijan and Georgia;
  • Creation of a small experimental laboratory for obtaining mass production of entomopathogens.
Project results
  • A new approach on the pest-control of agricultural crops (hazelnuts and green vegetables), by using only entomopathogens dependent on the phonology of pest insects, established and used by 40 farmers;
  • Functional network covering 60 value chain members in Georgia and Azerbaijan participating in economic activities and promoting cross-border trade development established;
  • Promoted environment-friendly and organic practices in agricultural production;
  • Reduced level of pollution through elimination of chemical products in crop protection techniques and replacement with organic elements;
  • Ecologically safe agricultural products promoted on the market of both countries.
